Websites that work.

WordPress vs custom website: we get asked this a lot. In short: WordPress is handy if you want a standard site quickly with lots of ready-made parts. A custom website is smarter if speed, security or specific features matter to your business.

No choice is always better. In this article we weigh up the pros and cons honestly, so you can decide what suits your situation.

What's the difference between WordPress and a custom website?

WordPress is a widely used system for building and managing websites. You choose a theme for the look and add features with plugins. Those are small extensions, for example for forms, SEO or an online store.

With a custom website, the site is built for your business. Design and code are made for what you need, without unnecessary parts. Content is often managed through a separate CMS, a management system where you edit text and photos yourself.

So the difference is mainly in the foundation: with WordPress you start with a big package and remove or add things. With a custom site you start from scratch and only build what's needed.

The advantages of WordPress

WordPress isn't popular for nothing. These are its strengths:

  • Quick to launch. With an existing theme you have a working site in no time.
  • Lots of plugins. There's an extension for almost every feature.
  • Well-known system. Many developers work with it, so switching provider is easy.
  • Low starting price for a simple site.
  • Plenty of help online, if you want to tinker yourself.

The disadvantages of WordPress for your business

WordPress's strength is also its weak spot. The more plugins and the heavier the theme, the more can go wrong:

  • Slowness. Many themes load code you don't use. That makes the site slower, including on mobile.
  • Security. WordPress is a popular target. Outdated plugins are a common way in for hackers.
  • Maintenance. The theme, plugins and WordPress itself need regular updates. One update can break something else.
  • Dependency. If a plugin's developer stops, you're stuck with a part that no longer gets updates.
  • Limits. If you want something no plugin can do, it quickly gets complicated and expensive.

That doesn't mean every WordPress site is slow or insecure. A well-built, well-maintained site can work fine. But it does take discipline. Also read our article on securing your website if you already have a WordPress site.

When should you choose a custom website?

A custom website makes most sense if your site needs to do more than show information. Think of these situations:

  • You want a fast site that scores well on Google's Core Web Vitals.
  • You need a feature that doesn't exist off the shelf, such as a price checker, your own ordering system or a customer portal.
  • You want a link with your planning, CRM or accounting software.
  • You want less maintenance and less risk of security holes through plugins.
  • You want a design that truly fits your brand, not a theme.

An example: for Apple Mix Fried Chicken in Den Helder we built a custom online ordering platform. With a menu in 18 categories, diet and allergen labels such as halal, vegan and gluten-free, a basket with delivery costs and a minimum order, and a live "open now" notice. Something like that is cleaner to build as a custom site than with a stack of plugins.

Can you manage a custom website yourself?

A common worry: with a custom site you depend on your developer for every text change. That doesn't have to be the case. A good custom website comes with a CMS where you edit text, photos, news items and pages yourself. It's often even clearer than managing WordPress, because you only see what your site needs.

With WordPress you can do a lot yourself, but that's a double-edged sword. Installing a plugin takes two clicks, and that's exactly why a site sometimes fills up with parts nobody maintains any more. So with either option, agree who manages what: you the content, the developer the technology. Read more about the different management systems in our article on choosing a CMS.

WordPress vs custom website: long-term costs

WordPress often looks cheaper at the start. But look at the years after too. Premium plugins and themes often need a yearly licence. Updates take time. And if the site becomes slow or messy after a few years, a complete rebuild sometimes follows.

A custom website usually has a higher starting price, but fewer moving parts. That saves on maintenance and risk. It's best to compare the total cost over a few years, not just the build price. Read more in how much does a website cost.

A quick decision guide

Still unsure? Answer these questions for yourself:

  • Is your site mainly an online business card with a few pages? Then WordPress or a simple solution is often enough.
  • Does the site need to bring in enquiries, bookings or orders? Then custom usually pays off.
  • Do you have someone who keeps up with updates? If not, choose as few plugins as possible, or a custom site with maintenance.
  • Do you want to expand later with a portal or integration? Then a flexible custom foundation is handier.
  • Is speed important for your findability? Custom gives you more control.

Is your site heading more towards an application, with logins and its own data? Then also read website or web application.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress suitable for a business website?

Yes, WordPress works fine for many business sites, especially if it's a few information pages. Do watch the number of plugins and make sure updates are kept up. Otherwise speed and security become a problem.

Is a custom website more expensive than WordPress?

Usually at the start, yes. But a custom site often needs fewer licences and less maintenance. So compare the total cost over a few years rather than just the build price.

Can I manage a custom website myself?

Yes, if it has a CMS connected. With it you edit text, photos and pages without code. Do ask for a walkthrough at handover.

Why is my WordPress site so slow?

Often it's down to a heavy theme, lots of plugins, large images or cheap hosting. Sometimes cleaning up and optimising already helps a lot. If the site stays slow, a new foundation may be the better step.
