A website shows
A website tells people who you are and what you do. Visitors read, look around and get in touch. The goal is usually to be found in Google and turn visitors into customers. Think of a business website with services, prices, reviews and a contact form.
A web application lets people do something
In a web application people log in and arrange something themselves: book an appointment, track an order, manage their details. Behind the scenes there is a database with customers, appointments or products.
An example: a system where customers book online and the business keeps track of customers and appointments in one place. That is no longer a website, but a web application.
Which one do you need?
- Mainly want to be found and build trust? Then a website is enough.
- Doing work that customers could do themselves, like booking, ordering or passing on details? Then a web application saves you time.
- Copying data between systems? Then you may mostly need an integration.
Often it is a combination: a website that attracts visitors, with a web application behind it for customers who are already on board.
