Getting found.

How long does SEO take to work? You usually see the first movement after a few months, and it often takes six months to a year before SEO really brings in customers. With little competition it goes faster; with a new website in a crowded market, slower.

There's no fixed number. But you can estimate well where you stand, and see early on whether your work is having an effect. That's what this article is about. Not sure yet exactly what SEO is? Read what is SEO first.

Why SEO takes time

SEO, or search engine optimisation, means improving your website so it ranks higher in Google. For that, Google has to do three things: find your pages, understand them and trust them. That last one in particular takes time.

  • Finding: Google doesn't crawl your whole site every day. New or updated pages are sometimes only revisited after days or weeks.
  • Understanding: Google compares your page with all the other pages on the same topic.
  • Trusting: links from other sites, reviews and how visitors use your site build up slowly.

On top of that, your competitors don't stand still. Anyone who has been publishing good content for years has a lead you won't close in a month.

What determines how quickly SEO delivers results?

Whether your SEO delivers results in three months or twelve depends mainly on these points:

  • The age and history of your domain. A new website starts from zero; an existing site with good pages already has trust.
  • Competition for your keywords. 'Plumber Den Helder' is quicker to win than 'mortgage'.
  • Local or national. Local searches are usually quicker to win, especially with a good Google Business Profile.
  • The technical state of your site. Slow pages or indexing errors hold everything back.
  • How much and how well you publish. One good page a month works better than ten thin ones.
  • Your starting point. A site already on page two is quicker to get onto page one than a site that ranks nowhere.

A realistic SEO timeline by phase

Every situation is different, but this is a common course for a small or medium-sized business starting SEO seriously. See it as an indication, not a promise.

  • Months 1 to 2: the basics. Fixing technical errors, choosing keywords, improving titles and copy on important pages. You see little in Google yet.
  • Months 2 to 4: first signals. Pages appear in the search results more often, often still in low positions. The number of impressions in Google Search Console rises.
  • Months 4 to 6: the first clicks. For less competitive keywords you reach page one. More visitors come from Google.
  • Months 6 to 12: enquiries and customers. With a consistent approach, Google becomes a steady source of leads.
  • After a year: building and maintaining. You expand to harder keywords and hold on to your rankings.

An example: an installer with an existing site who only wants to be found in his own town often reaches those last phases sooner than a new webshop wanting to compete nationally with big brands. The work is the same; the distance to the top isn't.

With a new website, each phase can take longer. With an existing site that only had a few technical errors, you sometimes see improvement within weeks.

How to tell early whether your SEO is working

Waiting for the phone to ring is a poor yardstick. There are earlier signals that show you're heading in the right direction:

  • Impressions: how often your site appears in Google, even if nobody clicks. This usually rises first.
  • The number of keywords you're found for.
  • Average position per important keyword, measured over weeks rather than per day.
  • Indexed pages: are all your important pages in Google?
  • Organic traffic, meaning visits from the regular search results, in Google Analytics.
  • Enquiries or sales from that organic traffic.

You'll find all these numbers for free in Google Search Console and Google Analytics. Look monthly, not daily. Rankings fluctuate from day to day; that says little.

Can SEO go faster? What does and doesn't help

There are ways to speed up the process, and ways that actually do damage.

What helps:

  • Start with pages that are almost on page one. That's where a small improvement pays off fastest.
  • Go for specific keywords first, such as a service plus a town, before aiming at broad terms.
  • Fix technical problems straight away, so Google can read your pages easily.
  • Ask customers for reviews and make sure your business details are the same everywhere.

What doesn't help:

  • Buying links in large numbers. Google recognises it and can penalise your site.
  • Dozens of thin pages that say almost the same thing.
  • Changing everything every week. Then Google can't see what works.

If you need customers right now, advertising is faster. Read SEO or Google Ads to see how to combine the two smartly while your SEO grows.

How long does SEO last if you stop?

A question asked less often: what happens if you stop? Good rankings don't disappear overnight. But competitors keep working, Google regularly adjusts how it ranks and your content gets dated. Over time your rankings usually slip. SEO works best as a steady, calm habit, not a one-off project.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a new website to appear in Google?

A new website often appears in Google within a few days to weeks, especially if you submit it through Google Search Console. Being in Google is different from ranking high, though. Good rankings usually take months.

How long does SEO take to work for local keywords?

Local keywords with little competition often deliver results faster, sometimes within a few months. A well filled-in Google Business Profile and reviews help a lot.

Why isn't my website at the top after three months of SEO?

Three months is still early for many keywords, especially with a new website or lots of competition. Look at early signals such as more impressions and more keywords in Search Console. If those are rising, you're on the right track.

Can an SEO agency guarantee a top 3 position?

No. Nobody controls how Google ranks, so a guarantee of a fixed position isn't honest. Be careful with anyone who promises it.
