More customers, online.

SEO vs Google Ads? The short answer: Google Ads brings in visitors quickly for as long as you pay, while SEO slowly builds up visitors who keep coming without you paying per click. For many small businesses the best choice isn't either-or, but a smart split over time.

Which way you should go depends on your budget, your urgency and your market. In this article we put the differences side by side honestly and give a few rules of thumb to help you choose.

What's the difference between SEO and Google Ads?

Both are about being found on Google. The difference is in how you get there.

  • SEO (search engine optimisation) is about the ordinary, unpaid results. You improve your website, your content and your reputation so Google ranks you higher. You don't pay per click. Read more in what is SEO.
  • Google Ads is advertising on Google. Your ad appears above or below the ordinary results, labelled 'Sponsored'. You pay per click. This is also called SEA, search engine advertising.

SEO and Google Ads compared

  • Speed: Google Ads can bring in visitors within a day. SEO usually needs months before you clearly see the effect.
  • Cost: with Google Ads you pay for every click. With SEO you invest in time, content and technology, but you don't pay per visitor.
  • Staying power: stop Google Ads and the traffic stops immediately. Good SEO often keeps working for a long time.
  • Control: with Google Ads you choose exactly which keywords and which region you appear for. With SEO, Google decides and you have less direct control.
  • Measurability: Google Ads can be measured very precisely per keyword. SEO can be measured too, but less directly per keyword.
  • Trust: many people prefer clicking an ordinary result to an ad. Others don't mind.

When should you choose Google Ads?

Google Ads is a good fit when you need results fast or want to test something. For example:

  • You've just started and your website doesn't appear anywhere on Google yet.
  • You want to get a new service or promotion noticed quickly.
  • Your work is seasonal, such as air conditioning in summer or snow clearing in winter.
  • You first want to know which keywords bring in customers before you put months of SEO work into them.
  • Big national sites dominate the top of your market, so ranking organically will take a long time.

What it costs and how to set a budget is covered in how much Google Ads costs.

When should you choose SEO?

SEO is a good fit when you're building for the long term and don't want to depend on an ad budget. For example:

  • You work locally and there are only a few competitors in your region. With local SEO you can often get a long way.
  • Customers ask lots of questions before they buy. Good articles and explainer pages catch them early.
  • Click prices in your industry are high, which makes advertising expensive.
  • You want to build an asset: pages that keep working for years.

Why SEO and Google Ads often work best together

SEO and Google Ads reinforce each other more than many business owners think. A common approach:

  • Start with Google Ads to get enquiries straight away and learn which keywords bring in customers.
  • Use that knowledge for your SEO. Write pages around the keywords that worked well in Ads.
  • Meanwhile, build up your website, content and reviews.
  • Once you rank well organically for a keyword, you can lower your ad budget there and use it for other keywords.

Both channels also need the same foundation: a fast website, clear pages per service and good tracking. A strong landing page lowers your click price in Google Ads and helps your SEO at the same time. So investing in your website pays off twice.

Two real-world examples

Take a new beauty salon in a medium-sized town. There are a few competitors, the website has just gone live and doesn't rank anywhere yet. The owner wants to fill her diary fast. For her it makes sense to start with a small Google Ads campaign on treatments in her town. At the same time she sets up her Google Business Profile properly and asks every customer for a review. After a few months she can often lower the ad budget.

Now take an accountant who has been running for years and gets work mainly through referrals. He's in no hurry, but wants more enquiries from freelancers (zzp'ers). Click prices for financial services are often high. For him, SEO with clear explainer articles and service pages is a more logical investment. Those keep working for years.

Common misconceptions

  • 'SEO is free.' You don't pay per click, but it does cost time, content and technology.
  • 'Google Ads is money down the drain.' Only if it's badly set up or not measured.
  • 'If I advertise, it helps my SEO.' No. Google keeps the two separate. You do learn from Ads which keywords work, though.
  • 'I'll do SEO and be done in a month.' SEO is an ongoing process, not a one-off job.
  • 'I'll switch Ads on and never look at it again.' Without adjustments, budget leaks away to searches that bring nothing in.

How to make the choice for your business

Ask yourself three questions. How quickly do you need new customers? Do you have more budget or more time? And how crowded is your market? If you need customers fast and have budget to advertise, start with Google Ads and build SEO alongside it. If you have little budget but plenty of patience, focus on SEO and your Google Business Profile. Unsure? Test Ads for a few months and see what it delivers.

At Violexa we do both as part of our online marketing: SEO, Google Ads and social media. That starts at €599 excl. VAT (€725 incl. VAT) per month, with no minimum term and cancellable monthly with one month's notice. You pay the ad budget separately to Google. Because we also build websites, we can improve the pages your visitors land on straight away.

Still not sure what suits you? Book a free quickscan. In 30 minutes we discuss your market, your website and your goals, online or on site. Afterwards you get short written advice with a price indication, with no obligation.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, SEO or Google Ads?

Neither is always better. Google Ads gives quick results for as long as you pay. SEO takes longer but keeps working. For many small businesses a combination works best.

What's the difference between SEO and SEA?

SEO is improving your position in the ordinary, unpaid results. SEA is advertising in search engines, such as with Google Ads, where you pay per click.

Does Google Ads help my SEO?

Not directly. Google keeps ads and ordinary results separate. But through Google Ads you quickly learn which keywords bring in customers, and you can use that knowledge for your SEO.

How long does it take for SEO to work?

You usually see the first improvements after a few months. How fast it goes depends on your competition, your website and how much you invest. Locally it often goes faster than nationally.
